The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has commenced a two-week capacity building program on commercial-scale rice production and processing in Abia State.

The Flagg-Off program, held at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, aims to empower local farmers and stakeholders with the knowledge and skills necessary to boost rice production in the region.

In his keynote address, NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, represented by Abia State representative on the Board of NDDC,Chief Dr. Eruba Dimgba, emphasized the commission’s commitment to implementing agricultural programs that promote food security.
Dr. Ogbuku stressed that skilled manpower is crucial to achieving the commission’s goals in agriculture, hence the need for capacity building initiatives like this program.

Dr. Ogbuku added that that this agricultural initiative directly supports the economic agenda of the Federal Government of Nigeria to promote infrastructural development, food security and poverty alleviation. He further highlighted that participants will also receive support packages to enhance their rice production capabilities.

The Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Prof. M. O. Iwe, commended the NDDC for its investment in human capital development and agricultural initiatives. He noted that such programs align with the national agenda of promoting agribusiness as a viable means of economic diversification.

Additional highlights of the event included two insightful paper presentations. The first, titled “NDDC Intervention Program on Food Security,” was delivered by Dr. Mrs. Winifred Madume, a Director of Agriculture and Fisheries in NDDC. This presentation shed light on the commission’s initiatives aimed at promoting food security in the region.

The second paper, “Overview of Rice Farming in Nigeria,” was presented by Prof. Ike Nwachukwu from the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. Professor Nwachukwu’s presentation provided a comprehensive overview of the rice farming industry in Nigeria, offering valuable insights and expertise to the participants.

This initiative is part of the NDDC’s efforts to promote food security and economic development in the Niger Delta region. By empowering local farmers and stakeholders, the commission aims to boost rice production and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
